Overview
Role: Packaging Designer | Timeline: 2 months | Tools: InDesign, Illustrator, + Miro
The NC State Wine Labels Contest grew out of the university’s Licensed Wine Project, which includes three product tiers:
Tier 1: Muscadine semi-sweet wine
Tier 2: Wolfpack® Red and Wolfpack® White
Tier 3: Premium limited vintage wine
Our class partnered with NC State’s Brand Management team to design labels for one selected tier. I chose Tier 2: Wolfpack® Red and Wolfpack® White, a paired set of mid-priced table wines created to complement food. The system required two coordinated labels: one for red and one for white, unified in concept while distinct in color and tone.
Challenge
I began this project by researching NC State history and what reflects the pride and joy of NC State. The target audience is current and future alumni and fans, meaning the visual identity should be flexible and meaningful. How can I create a memorable, unique look to commemorate being part of the Wolfpack? What typographic hierarchies and images focus and consolidate aspiration, vision, and values?
Outcome
Wolf Red and Pack White represent the classic NC State look with a playful wolf sketch. It is recognizable by all NC State fans and caters to a fun outing or a casual dining experience. Through its simplistic style, it captures the spirit of being a State fan and even mimics the well-known "Wolf" - "Pack" cheer at the stadium and arena.
Wolf Red and Pack White received an honorable mention by the NC State Wine Committee, stating, "No mistaking this as anything but NC State, using the Wolf - Pack cheer."
